Shoreham-by-Sea has a character all of its own — a working fishing harbour, a remarkable cluster of houseboats along the Adur estuary, and a historic core around the Norfolk Bridge conservation area with timber-framed and Victorian properties. The houseboats in particular are one of the most unusual plumbing environments anywhere in Sussex: bespoke water and waste systems, constrained spaces, salt-water proximity, and tidal movement that puts mechanical stress on every joint and fitting. Onshore, the older streets around the High Street, East Street and the conservation area have Victorian and Edwardian terraces with the usual coastal-town features: original lead service pipes, copper pipework now well past its design life, and external pipework that has been corroded by decades of sea-air exposure.
